International Congress for the Advancement of Women visits Basel

From Thursday, 4 July 2019, Basel will be the host city for the Global Summit of Women – the largest international congress engaging with the future-oriented advancement of women in the global economy – over three days. Around 1,000 participants will take part in the congress, including leading women from business, politics and the media as well as ministers from 70 countries worldwide. This major event will be opened by President of the Government Elisabeth Ackermann.

The Global Summit of Women, which will take place from Thursday to Saturday at the Congress Center Basel, will be attended by around 1,000 participants – including leading women from business, politics and the media as well as ministers from 70 countries worldwide. On Saturday, Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga will also take part in the congress. The Global Summit of Women will be opened on Thursday by President of the Government Elisabeth Ackermann. In addition, Eva Herzog will represent the government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt at the congress. On the evening of the opening day, the Canton of Basel-Stadt will organise a welcome dinner.

The non-profit organisation Global Summit of Women, based in Washington (USA), was founded in 1990 by its current president, Irene Natividad. The Global Summit of Women takes place every year in a different country (last year in Sydney). The event is the largest international congress dealing with gender issues and the advancement of women in leadership positions, the opening of the global economy to women, women's progress in the global economy, and global and regional aspects of the economy. During the 2019 summit in the Congress Center Basel, numerous podium events and workshops on these topics will take place.
